The highly branched 4-methylpentene-1, creates for polymerization a semi-crystalline thermoplastic product with is lightweight, transparent and very hard: the POLY-4-METHYL-1-PENTENE (PMP).
CHARACTERISTICS AND APPLICATION FIELDS
he PMP can be injection molded, blown, thermoformed, welded and machined; extrusion is however particularly difficult.
The PMP is the lightest of all plastic materials; also it has very high hardness and mechanical strength. The PMP has a crystallinity of about 65% and the transparency is due to the fact that the amorphous and crystalline areas have almost the same refractive index: it follows that its optical properties are exceptional. PMP homopolymers are often slightly opaque, as between the amorphous areas and crystalline areas are formed of cracks due to the difference between the respective coefficients of elongation. The melting point is about 245 ° C, the operating temperature is about 180 ° C for short periods and of about 120 ° C for long periods. The PMP has very similar electrical properties to those of the EP. And ‘resistant to mineral acids, alcohols, alkalis, detergents, greases, oils and boiling water. Not resistant to ketones and aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons. Stress tends to the formation of cracks and is highly flammable. Has reduced aging stability, it is permitted for contact with food, and physiologically inert.
The PMP is ideal for the production of glass, lamps and lighting, special sterilizable technicians, films and packaging for the medical sector, food packaging, coils, rings, glasses, articles for the aerospace industry, pipe fittings and transparent.
