PISTON SEALS

Piston seals, used in both hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders, can be single- or double-acting according to the direction of the pressure generated inside the cylinder. The main purpose of the piston seals is to protect the head from potential leakage of fluids or gases: this is made possible only thanks to an excellent combination among sealing element, lubricating behavior, friction and extrusion resistance.

There are plenty of application fields: hydraulic presses, heavy construction equipments, hydraulic power units, machine tools and other machinery for various industrial fields.

The amount of usable profiles is remarkable: for a correct choice you should always consider parameters like the temperature, the working pressure and speed, the gasket material, the fluids involved, the coupling backlash, the overall dimensions and the surface roughness.

Piston seals may be composed by a slip ring in thermoplastic material with an O-ring in elastomeric material; otherwise they can be simply made either in thermoplastic or in elastomeric material. Steel springs can also be inserted.

During the assembly of the elements it is necessary to pay close attention in order to avoid cuts and permanent deformations that may damage the functioning. General tolerances and dimensions of the houses refer to international regulations.

The choice of the suitable material is related to the application criticality. The most popular materials include PTFE (virgin, additivated, loaded with glass, bronze, carbon graphite, carbon fiber, graphite, molybdenum sulphide), POM, PE, polyurethane and various rubber types (FKM, EPDM , NBR).
